Lafayette is named for one of the early settlers, Lafayette Miller. Miller and his wife settled in the site that today bears his name in 1864. By 1877, Mr. Miller passed away leaving his wife and six children. When coal was discovered on the Millers’ ranch in 1884, the town site was planted and named after Mrs. Miller’s late husband.
